Study of Dronino Iron Meteorite Weathering in Clay Sand Using Mössbauer Spectroscopy
نویسندگان
چکیده
Weathering products of two fragments of Dronino iron ungrouped meteorite found in the wet and drier clay sand were studied using X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy with a high velocity resolution. The products of metal oxidation in the internal and external surface layers were different for both fragments. The weathering products in fragment found in the wet clay sand contain magnetite (Fe3O4), maghemite (-Fe2O3), goethite (-FeOOH) and probably ferrihydrite (5Fe2O3 9H2O) while those in fragment found in drier clay sand contained ferric hydrous oxides (FeOOH) and siderite (FeCO3) mainly. Concretions found near the first fragment contain ferric hydrous oxides (FeOOH) mainly.

Dating climatic change in hot deserts using desert varnish on meteorite finds
A thin coating of desert varnish occurs on Forrest 009 and Nurina 004, both equilibrated ordinary chondrite (L6) finds from the Nullarbor Plain, Australia. This finely laminated deposit is chemically and petrographically comparable to the varnish found on terrestrial rocks. Forrest 009, which has a terrestrial age of 5.9 kyr, has a 100-130 μm thick coating of desert varnish that has a laterally...
متن کاملMetallic Iron in Meteorites as a Sensitive Tracer of Surface-volatile Interactions on Mars
Introduction: Meteorites on Mars (martian finds) are more than curiosities. They may provide a means to gauge the past and recent extent of water exposure across the martian latitudes. The many roles of water in solid, liquid, and vapor phases pose a set of outstanding questions relating to the geologic history and habitability of Mars. Because we are looking for evidence of trace amounts of wa...
متن کاملSurface Material Analysis of S-type Asteroids: Removing the Space Weathering Effect from Reflectance Spectrum
Introduction: Recent years, many researchers have been observing a lot of asteroid reflectance spectra in the UV, visible to NIR at wavelength region [e.g., 1-4]. Reflectance spectroscopy of asteroid at this range should bring us a lot of information about its surface materials. Pyroxene and olivine have characteristic absorption bands in this wavelength range. Low-Ca pyroxene has two absorptio...
متن کاملAlterations in Chemical Composition during the Progressive Weathering of Dwyka Tillite and Dolerite in ' Natal
Description of Materials Soil profiles developed from Dwyka tillite consist of a fine sandy loam overlying a gravel and rubble layer and succeeded by a zone of clay illuviation. Below this, the disintergrating tillite may proceed to depths of two hundred feet under favourable circumstances. This material in its most weathered aspect consists of a "soapy" orangy yellow fine silty clay of the fol...
